A Journey in the Past

Day 1
Arrival at Sofia airport. Overnight.
Day
2
Breakfast. Morning sightseeing tour of Sofia – visit of the “St. Sophia”
Basilica, “St. Alexander Nevski” cathedral with the Icon gallery, situated
in the crypt, continue with a walk in city centre – the National Assembly
with the monument of Tzar Osvoboditel, the Russian church “St. Nikolay”.
Lunch.

In the afternoon visit of the National Historic Museum
In the afternoon visit of the National Historic Museum and the
Medieval church of Boyana included in the UNESCO world Heritage List. Dinner
with folk program in a traditional Bulgarian restaurant. Overnight.
Day 3
Breakfast. Early morning departure to Rila monastery (included in the UNESCO
world heritage list) - the biggest spiritual centre, dating back to 10th c.,
with magnificent Renaissance wall paintings and a precious library. Lunch.
Continue to Plovdiv. Afternoon sightseeing tour of the old town – visit of
the Roman Forum, the Roman stadium, the Mosque. Dinner in a restaurant in
the old town. Overnight.
Day 4
Breakfast. Visit of Bachkovo monastery. Continue to the town of Kardjali.
Visit of the archaeological site – the ancient Perpericon. Perpericon has
been a large city, situated on a hill, originating as a settlement in the
V-III centuries BC. Lunch in Kardjali. Return back to Plovdiv. Continue
sightseeing tour of the old town (the Ethnographic museum, the
Archaeological museum, houses from the Renaissance ensemble, the church “St.
Konstantin and Elena”, the Roman amphitheatre). Dinner and overnight in
Plovdiv.
Day 5
Breakfast. Morning visit of the ancient Thracian temple near the village
Starosel. Continue to Hissar – an ancient Roman fortress and present SPA
resort. Lunch. Continue to Kazanlak. Visit of the original painted Thracian
tomb included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Dinner and overnight in
Kazanlak.
Day 6
Breakfast. Departure to the seaside. Visit of the painted Thracian tomb in
Pomorie. Lunch. Visit of the Medieval churches in Nessebar included in the
UNESCO world heritage list. Proceed to Varna. Dinner and overnight in Varna.
Day 7
Breakfast. Visit of Aladja monastery. Sightseeing tour of Varna - visit of
the Roman baths, the historical & archaeological museum, and in the vicinity
– the Pobiti Kamani. Dinner and overnight in Varna.
Day 8
Breakfast. Departure to Madara – visit of the rock relief Madara horseman
included in the UNESCO World Heritage List Visit of the first Bulgarian
capital Pliska – archaeological site. Continue to Isperih and the newly
found Thracian tomb in Sveshtari (6th c. B.C.). Dinner and overnight in
Shoumen.
Day 9
Breakfast. Departure to the capital of the First Bulgarian State – Veliki
Preslav – archaeological site. Continue to Veliko Tarnovo. Sightseeing tour
of the town - the Tzarevetz hill, the fortress walls, the Memorial Church.
Evening visit of the “Sound and Light” show in Veliko Tarnovo. Dinner.
Overnight in Arbanassi.
Day 10
Breakfast. Morning visit of the architectural and historic reserve Arbanassi
with its Renaissance churches and stone houses. On the way to Etara, stop to
see Dryanovo monastery. Next stop Etara ethnographical reserve. Dinner and
overnight in Sofia.
Day 11
Breakfast. Transfer to the airport.
